If you're studying microbes, you often take a sample of microbes using what's called aseptic or sterile technique. This involves collecting the microbes in a manner that prevents contamination with the microbes that live on you. You may wear sterile gloves, not touch anything that's not sterile, and may inoculate the microbes into sterile media.
