Trophic Level

(n.) Energy is transferred from one level to another in an ecosystem, often by the consumption of one organism by another. The position that an organism occupies in this transfer is referred to as its trophic level. For example, plants are primary producers; deer are primary consumers; and wolves are secondary consumers.
